dr. coco's ocean therapy

Carlos ‘Coco’ Trigo, Corpus Christi, TX

Sending a big thank you to all the amazing medical teams across the world for risking themselves to save others. This is 29-year-old emergency doctor Carlos ‘Coco’ Trigo from Puerto Rico, now living in Texas, USA. He sent in some shots, saying, “After two months of intense and stressful work in the frontlines of the current pandemic, I was finally able to escape and score some time in the water, which was much needed for my mental health. There is no therapy like the ocean!” Amen to that Coco, and we wish you great wind and waves to replenish your vital energies. Got your own images you’d like to submit to our Readers’ Gallery? GKA KITE WORLD TOUR 2020

Amended Schedule

All event industries have been hit hard, but the GKA Kite World Tour have published a new, freshly updated 2020 event calendar and hope to still be able to crown Kite-Surf and Freestyle World Champions at the end of the year.

The first GKA Freestyle World Cup is now scheduled for Tarifa at the beginning of October. Brazil has been pencilled into the calendar in November and could be either a Kite-Surf or Freestyle event. Should all go to plan the Freestyle World Champion would then be crowned at a new destination, Neom in Saudi Arabia, in late November.

Also look out for the first GKA Freestyle HYDROFOIL World Cup event, scheduled for Fortaleza in Brazil in December. Distance Battle

The GKA Kite World Tour Distance Battle is a video based competition. A selection of the world's best strapless and twintip freestyle riders from around the globe have been invited to compete from their home spots, filming themselves during five minute heats. These unedited videos will be sent to and judged by the official GKA judges in a live streamed video event format, with live scoring, live judges, and live commentary.

The top six men and top three women of the 2019 GKA Kite World Ranking are already qualified. You can now vote for the remaining competitors who you want to see enter the event via a public online poll. Click the link below.

UK KITESURFING ARMADA: CANCELLED 2020

Looking Ahead to 2021

Unfortunately, it’s bad news for Kitesurfing Armada fans this year with the confirmed cancellation of the 2020 festival. We feel for the organisers who always put in such hard work… but for sure we’ll see them back bigger and better than ever in 2021! New Director of Armada Events, Mark Cole, said: “As we all navigate our way through the current situation and what will happen in the coming months, we have come to the conclusion that to ensure a really successful festival for all our supporters, we need to focus on holding the next Kitesurfing Armada Festival in 2021, as it is clear now that we sadly cannot hold a large-scale event with thousands of attendees this year. “In taking this difficult decision, we can make sure that in 2021 we can put on the best Armada event ever, with a greater mix of kitesurfing, entertainment and activities and the most exciting line-up of bands for all our visitors to enjoy.” Booking price will remain the same for 2021. www.armadaevents.co.uk

BKC VIRTUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Video Competition

The Kitesurfing Armada was due to stage round one of the British Kitesurfing Championships 2020. Following that cancellation and the remaining uncertainty over the second and third rounds the BKC launched the opening of the ‘Virtual British Kitesurf Championships’. Got moves and a camera?

A SENSIBLE RETURN TO KITING

BKSA Guidelines for Kiting After Lockdown

Although we are aware that there are some places that kiteboarding is still not possible, lockdown measures have been easing in many parts of the world. In the UK, kitesports became a justifiable form of daily exercise for everyone who is competent and able to practice the sport safely, from May 13th onwards.

The British Kitesports Association worked closely with other national sports governing bodies in the UK to develop a sensible code of practice to ensure social distancing remains a keen priority in order to help ensure there’s no second wave of Covid-19.

The association works hard to make sure that kitesurfing beaches stay open and that the instructor teams and clubs are operating safely. Membership also includes £5 million third party liability should you be in an accident.
