TAKE A VISUAL VACATION

James Carew’s a machine. Hopefully his barrel chasing cover story and video gave you a refreshing blast as you entered this issue; like walking through the welcome breeze of an air conditioning unit, running full tilt, on a hot summer’s day. Yes, spring’s finally just about here in the northern hemisphere. There’s sanity in the sea and we’ve almost made it through to the other side... Whether you spend ten minutes browsing or 30 minutes fully locked into this issue, as usual, we’re here to deliver a little escape... Headline features include an interview with the guys at Surf Club Keros, who are located on Limnos island in Greece. Making the decision to book holidays is the hot topic of the moment and, according to owner Rick Krystallis, they retained good visitor numbers last year, despite the pandemic. He believes that the passion kiters have for travel will see them enjoy another good season in ‘21. Take a look around – it’s easy to see why people can’t wait to go back!

Necessary for his job as an equipment developer, Mark Shinn was still one of the big travellers last year. In an attempt to encourage your empathy with his work load, he describes his various airport experiences in the last 12 months in his regular column and airs his concerns for the future of some kiteboarding locations if travel restrictions aren’t lifted soon. Mopping up pro rider business; Liam Whaley’s career is scrutinised by the beady eye of his biggest fan boy, Colin Colin Carroll. Ross-Dillon Player gets quizzed by fellow CT local (and our new assistant editor) Kyle Cabano after the Naish rider won the season’s only pro big air event so far: the Big Air Kite League. You can also read Kyle’s photo journal from the BAKL event as he was front and centre with his lens, here. On the gear front, we look at how two Eleveight riders went viral with some absolutely massive boosts in Leucate in January. Here at KW HQ the collection of products we amassed for testing in the last two months couldn’t have been more varied, meaning whatever the wind conditions, we had a tool for the job. From a proven King of the Air winning kite, through very different light wind designs, to a down-the-line surfboard charger and a twin-tip that splits in half for easy storage. Dive straight into the reviews here: Airush Union V6 10m / Cabrinha Contra 9m / CrazyFly Sculp 12 & 9m / Naish Pivot 9 & 7m / Ocean Rodeo A-Series Flite 14.5m / Naish Global 5’9’’ and Shinn Slicer 138. Perhaps it’s time to brush up on some basics? Getting your stance right couldn’t be more important as a foundation for whatever board you ride. The BKSA’s head of training, Andy Gratwick, is back with the key pointers to prime you for progression this season. If you have a moment to read the story of one of kiteboarding’s best photographers, Ydwer van der Heide, who has suffered a terrible accident and faces a long recovery, we’d appreciate it. To quote Mr. Shinn, let’s look forward to a return to the glory days of 2019 soon! Who’d have thought... Enjoy the issue.
