THE THREE BEST SPOTS TO KITE ON GRAN CANARIA, FROM NORTH TO SOUTH:

EL BURRERO: right next to the airport, there is a jetty that sticks out into the ocean that cleans up the waves on the inside. The launch from the car park is gusty but you will find a weighted down tarp with rocks to set up your kite on. The spot can only hold around ten kiters but there is space downwind if it gets crowded. VARGAS: Ten minutes south of the airport and probably the most popular spot on the island, Vargas gets really nice waves. The upwind car park is for windsurfers and the downwind car park for kitesurfers. SALINAS: 20 minutes south of the airport and just downwind of Pozo, this is the most exposed kite spot on the island that gets the cleanest wind and huge waves when there’s swell. We ended up kiting here all the time as there was often no other kiters on the water which was nice for shooting

RESULT We spent eight days on the island and the wind was always over 25 knots, from sunrise to sunset. I was really impressed with the wind and this is definitely one of the best big air spots I have ever been to. While we didn’t get much in the way of waves, I can imagine when there is a swell running it would be epic for wave riding, too! I will be back when there’s swell for sure! An ideal place to film for a KOTA wildcard perhaps… There are very few places in the world that you can guarantee wind like this, so Gran Canaria is as good as it gets in my book. Short haul, cheap direct flights, plenty of wind and sun, what more do you need? Oh yeah, plenty of experience and maybe a nice, soft sandy beach… Look out for the Machine coming soon to: www.slingshotsports.com
