THE BEST PHOTOS AND VIDEOS OF 2021

Welcome to our end of year blowout issue! 2021 saw some semblance of normality return to many of our lives and we’re sending it off with an issue packed with incredible visuals throughout. Some of the videos that made it into our Videos of the Year selection were actually shot way back in early 2020, right before the pandemic hit. Interviews running alongside the videos this issue reveal how, like the rest of us, editors’ worlds went into shock and setting about to edit spectacular kiteboarding clips slipped down both their personal priority lists and work agendas. While there certainly weren’t as many videos released this year, some really unique edits dropped. Through Covid, some editors spent six months or, in some cases, up to a year finishing an edit, when inspiration returned. As a result, the polish in the final productions is sublime. As we look back on 2021, it’s clear that for many of us, kiteboarding has once again offered so much in the way of escapism. The images we’ve selected for the Photos of the Year gallery reflect all aspects of kiteboarding’s dynamic appeal. Elsewhere in the issue, learn the backroll transition in our video technique feature, Mark Shinn dissects the amazing small wave performances of the GKA riders at Dakhla (with video examples) and we have some choice excerpts from our special Winter print issue to enjoy, that was released in mid November. See you on the water, Jim Gaunt Kiteworld Editor
