KW VIDEOS OF THE YEAR:

THE GOAL WAS TO DROWN IN OUR OWN SPRAY

KAI LENNY

The last few years have obviously seen the rise of the vlog. While some are excruciating, there are also those whose personality and skills seem so naturally suited to the format. Kevin Langeree and Sam Light are pretty much guaranteed to entertain and lift kiters’ moods on an almost weekly basis. You’ve probably all watched some of Kevin and Sam’s vlogs, but this year perhaps their kiting content has been a little thinner on the ground, for obvious reasons. Deciding to limit ourselves to just one vlog video (otherwise we may have never released this issue such is the incessant volume of releases under the theme), Kai Lenny was our pick because he has continued rinsing out a stack of extraordinary content this year. Each of his videos comes crammed full of epic action and personality, and we can’t go beyond highlighting in some way his inspirational and naturally enthusiastic approach to ocean surf sports that we so admire. In his case of course, it’s ‘sports’ – plural. In this, one of his most recent vlogs, released closest to the time we went into production with this issue, called ‘The goal was to drown in our own spray (Honolua Bay + Hookipa)’, it happened to also feature a lot of kiting.

Kai’s videos are always a mixed bag of surfing, windsurfing, tow surfing, big wave paddle surfing, wing foiling, surf foiling and, of course, kitesurfing. In this video he’s frothing over a morning surf session as per... and then later that afternoon blends his surfboard skills by riding hard with a kite. Kai may be the most all-round ocean ripper on the planet, but he maintains an element of focus in his vlogs on breaking down some of the basics for people who may never have tried any of these sports before. He does it so succinctly that there’s barely time for die hard watermen and women to start glazing over. Plus, he always gives us an insight into the characters he rides and hangs with on Maui, too. This time he gives props to another of our favourite humans, kiter Jesse Richman. Watch it, and then go out and ride something. ANYTHING! A skateboard, a scooter, a SUP... whatever you can get your hands on. It’s the Kai effect!

We could of course have chosen the gender reveal video of him lighting a pink smoke canister while riding a big wave at Jaws, to let the world know that the twins he’s soon to become the father of, will be girls. What a ride they’re in for!
