KW VIDEOS OF THE YEAR:

SOUND OF WATER

ROBBY STEWART

Words: Holly Keenan

Robby Stewart, 24, is a multi-talented pro kitesurfer and wingsurfer who doesn’t let a lack of hearing hinder his abilities on the water. Quite the opposite in fact; his other senses seem tremendously heightened! In the video Robby’s father explains what he thinks makes Robby such a great guy? “He grew up hearing no lies and seeing everything. Seeing things that people don’t even look at.” He reckons Robby has a special ability to watch the moves that other pros are doing and quickly see ways to improve them yet further. His riding is truly impressive, inspired originally by seeing one of his dad’s friends kitesurf, who was also deaf. Like the rest of us, Robby was instantly attracted to the obvious feeling of freedom. In this short film we are also introduced to the enchanting Baja coastline in New Mexico, where Robby lives in an orchard with his dad and the film is touchingly narrated by his friend and Slingshot team mate, Fred Hope. Shot and produced by Kylie Zamarti, she describes the amazing experience of creating this film. “I got to have a different perspective on kiteboarding, combining Robby’s deeper story, but also showing how he totally shreds. I would have done that story even if Slingshot hadn’t asked me, but it was cool to get paid for it!” Robby says that kiting has allowed him to see the world and establish a family. “It brings me the most joy.”, Fred’s voice brings Robby’s sign language to our ears. In a world that currently craves empathy and an appreciation of all we have, this video delivers. Zarmati’s ability to connect the viewer with the subject grips immediately, as all we hear is the gentle, almost silent vibration of the wind as Robby approaches the beach in his much loved ocean coloured Chevrolet truck. A fabulous five minutes of viewing:
